SELECTED BOOKS

Making Pictures. Casey Reas. Anteism Books, 2019. In this first non-technical introduction to emerging AI techniques, artist Casey Reas explores what it’s like to make pictures with generative adversarial networks (GANs), specifically deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DCGANs). This text is imagined as a primer for readers interested in creative applications of AI technologies. Ideally, readers will explore the strategies of this emerging field as outlined, and remix them to suit their desires. We hope to inspire future research and collaboration, and to encourage a rigorous discussion about art in the age of machine intelligence.

A Mathematical Theory of Communication. Casey Reas. RRose Editions, 2018. 250 Copies. A Mathematical Theory of Communication is a series of landscapes created by blending ideas from conceptual art and information science. Each of the images in the book is one of infinite variations derived from a single source image, a collage of image fragments captured with an TV antenna. The title of this work is taken from a highly influential text published by Claude Shannon in 1948 that outlined the foundation of information theory. This book is a companion to a pair of murals commissioned by Landmarks, the public art program of the University of Texas at Austin.

Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Artists and Designers, Second Edition. Casey Reas and Ben Fry. MIT Press, 2014. By teaching computer programming within the context of the visual arts, this book has introduced a new literacy with software, enabling designers and artists to create new media for the present, and to imagine future media that are beyond the capacities of current software tools. It offers a thorough introduction to Processing, an open-source programming language that is used by students, artists, designers, and architects to program images, animation, and interactivity.

10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10. Nick Montfort, Patsy Baudoin, John Bell, Ian Bogost, Jeremy Douglass, Mary Flanagan, Mark Marino, Michael Mateas, Casey Reas, Warren Sack, Mark Sample, and Noah Vawter. MIT Press, 2013. Group-authored academic book in the software studies domain about a one-line Commodore 64 BASIC computer program. Reas contributed to the chapters on Regularity, Randomness, and REM Variations on Processing as well as designed and typeset the book and curated the images.

Form+Code in Design, Art, and Architecture. Casey Reas, Chandler McWilliams, and LUST. Princeton Architectural Press, 2010. A non-technical introduction to the history, theory, and practice of software in the arts. Organized into themes linked to aspects of code β€” repetition, transformation, parameters, visualization, and simulation β€” each of the book's sections contains an essay, code samples, and numerous illustrations. Translated and published in Japanese by BNN.
